A Taste of Bosnian Cuisine in the heart of Dubrovnik – The Taj Mahal Restaurant
by Saron Lease, Croatia Gems Company Founder & Director, 6th March 2017,
The Taj Mahal Restaurant in Dubrovnik Old Town, Croatia is Something a Bit Special and one of our favourites when we’re in town. If you’re going on a Croatia holiday this year we’d recommend you search it out…
From the name of the restaurant, you could be fooled into thinking this is an Indian restaurant in the middle of Dubrovnik. Wrong! This is an entirely different kettle of fish and a very popular one at that. It’s a well kept secret of many local ‘Dubrovnikans’ who don’t need to be asked twice to eat here. Us here at Croatia Gems included.
For starters it has one of those stupidly atmospheric locations, in one of the lamp lit back streets of Dubrovnik Old Town where you could easily forget what century you were in – whether you are at the street tables or in the old world, turkish feel interior, there is a wonderful ambiance.
Konoba Taj Mahal, Dubrovnik is no ordinary restaurant – it is the only one that specialises in Bosnian cuisine in the Old Town of Dubrovnik. And why do people come from far and wide to eat here? Answer: The Cevapcici! Pronounced “Chevapcheechee”, this dish is almost equivalent to the prized truffle in these parts. So definately worth ordering to try if you are there.
But of course there is more to Taj Mahal than that. This is the place to come if you want to try traditional and authentic Bosnian cooking with a big dose of atmosphere to boot. It’s great for romantic soirees or nights out with friends alike.
There are many things we could recommend to try on the menu here – there’s a wide choice of meat and other Bosnian specialties apart from the Cevapcici’s like “pita” (a cross between a pie and a pastry with meat or cheese), shis kebab and, if you make it to desert, you have to try Bosnian baklava.
According to the restaurant website, the influence of the food from this region is Turkish, Middle Eastern and also Mediterranean plus Austro Hungarian!
Seriously, go and have an evening at Taj Mahal, it’s a little gem in the heart of the old town of Dubrovnik…
