Midsummer Scene ( 21st June – 5th July 2018 )  is celebrating  its fifth  year as the only English theatre festival in Southeastern Europe.

In this relatively short period of time it has established itself as a major cultural event and as a platform for international  collaborations and concepts.

The Festival always coincides with the beginning of summer, and it its very first year, opened on the 450th Anniversary of Shakespeare’s birth. Dubrovnik joined the world celebrations of this important year by staging one of the Bard’s most beloved comedies: A Midsummer Night’s Dream in Fort Lovrjenac, one of the world’s most evocative and atmospheric venues.

The 2015 season brought Shakespeare’s Twelfth Nigth which then transferred to Vienna’s English Theatre at Christmas 2016 for a sold-out, critically acclaimed run and then travelled to Bermuda Festival in January 2017.

In 2016 we celebrated another important anniversary – 400 years since Shakespeare’s death. Therefore, we chose his most famous play that holds a special significance for Dubrovnik: Hamlet. It was also the first time that the titular role was played by a woman on a major Croatian stage.

Season 2017 saw the return to A Midsummer Night’s Dream with a brand new version directed by Helen Tennison, who has directed the festival’s headline productions in the previous two seasons. Following the great success of our last season and responding to the audience demand, Helen is returning this year with the same production.
