The Island of Hvar is reputedly the sunniest of all the Croatian Islands and has long been popular for its beautiful fishing villages, pine shaded, sandy bays and mesmerising and cosmopolitan Hvar Town – the perfect location for a Hvar apartment. It is an island of vineyards, olive groves, palms, lavender and rosemary with hilltop, Venetian style villages and a noticeably slower pace of life! Villages like Jelsa and Vrboska are lovely and Zavala will charm you and there are a nice selection of Hvar apartments here.

Hvar Apartments
As far as Hvar apartments go, Hvar Town is a good place to be based as it has everything – prehistoric and early stone-age relics have been found here as well as an Illyrian settlement. Many of the buildings and walls in the town date from the 16th century and there is a Venetian fortress to the north east that dominate the town’s skyline. It has wonderful views out across the Pakleni islands if you can make the climb up! The renaissance town square paved with marble is also impressive. Some of the best beaches are to be found on the Pakleni Islands (the little island of Palmizana, for example) just 10 minutes in a water taxi from the harbour. The town does change throughout the season though and is busy, with a fair bit of nightlife during the high season months of July and August.
If you want to visit at a calmer time then June and September are perfect as the weather is still gorgeous and there are still plenty of people in town, on the beaches and enjoying the restaurants. Of course, Hvar Town isn’t the only place to book a Hvar apartment and there are some delightful small, sea-edge towns and villages in other areas. In fact, the rest of the island is fairly quiet and rural. The highlights are the plethora of cosy island bays with little fishing cottages on the beach and convivial handfuls of apartments in little bays with one or two restaurants. Often close to a town so not cut off, these give you the feeling of being a bit off the beaten track without really being far from anything! Of course if you do want to go more remote, you can do that too! For a more balanced, good family and couples location, try Jelsa Bay and Vrboska which have very pretty, sandy bays with lots of shadey pine trees to fall asleep under. Their little sea edge harbours and marinas provide restaurants and that quintessential Croatian summer atmosphere…
